Navigation Station
This is my fifth album under Verdris Moth and it was composed during, and so inevitably also inspired by, a COVID-19 lockdown in the late summer/autumn of 2021. After four albums of quite densely-orchestrated, lush material in the Seasonals, I thought it would be nice for the next one to be more stripped-back by contrast, so it's just the band part of my regular ensemble on this one: two guitars, piano, keyboards, bass, and drums. I ended up calling it Navigation Station because, during the lockdowns, computer screens and TV/monitor screens were pretty much all I, and anybody, ever saw of the world, so life at home felt like being stuck on some kind of ship. So the album definitely goes into all those feelings of boredom, impatience, loneliness, and straight-up cabin fever of the time. More generally though, I'd say the album is about distance and/or journeys - as of 2024, I'm playing with ideas for an album about time, which would complement Navigation Station quite nicely.
